I went from copywriter to shamanic healer and back again. Here’s how:
2012: The copywriting years
As Digital Copy Lead at Virgin Media I’m serious about words, but not always about eyewear. I love my time at Virgin, but by 2012 I’m burned out and looking for the exit. An inner voice is urging me to go to Peru and drink Ayahuasca, but I ignore it for another couple of years. Because: fear.
2014: I stop ignoring Ayahuasca and head to the Amazon
Here I am at Heathrow, with my trusty travel companion, Paddington. (I haven’t intentionally matched my outfit with his, but I like the synchronicity) I’m going to a plant medicine retreat in Iquitos (at this stage, I think I’m coming home in two months.)
I fall in love … with plant medicine!
I wasn’t a plant medicine ‘natural’, or so I thought. But I love the magic, the connection with plant spirits and the deep inner work. I realise I am a ‘plant medicine person’. Here I am having a mystical experience in the middle of a Huachuma (San Pedro) journey (hence the VERY smiley face).
I get a job in the jungle
I’m talking to the owner of the retreat I’m been staying at, as my flight home is looming. ‘What will I do?’ I wonder. ‘I can’t imagine going back to my old life.’ ‘Well….do you fancy a job?’ Manager of an Ayahuasca retreat? I did not see that one coming.
2015: Apprenticing to Mama Coca
After six months in the jungle I move into Iquitos to do deeper work with the leaves of the most beautiful, magical plant ally: Coca. I apprentice with a coca shaman and have the most joyful, healing experiences ever (as well as a life-changing kundalini awakening).
2018: Re-entry and shamanic training
I’ve sold my flat in London and can feel ‘home’ calling. My pink Docs take me to Stroud, in Gloucestershire. I spend three years in this gorgeous, zany town on the edge of the Cotswolds, and train as a shamanic healer.
2019: Working as a shamanic healer and Purpose Guide
As well as becoming a certified shamanic practitioner, I also train as a Purpose Guide with Purpose Guides Institute. I work with them for six years: training, mentoring and finally teaching on the Purpose Discovery Program.
2024: The copy comeback!
A lot happens between 2019 and 2024: I meet my soulmate, Bernadette (who lives in London with her two daughters, so I move back there). And Soul eventually guides me to combine spiritual work and copywriting (?!*). I do advanced copy and sales page training with Copy School and Sales Page Prep School, and trust that the ‘how’ will reveal itself. And here I am!
